The tips of our Island Nations glow
Incandescent with historic hues
The colours you glimpse for a moment
Reflecting the glory of Great British dues.
What bright and what wonderful colours!
Flag flourished, unfurled on the rock.
Our sunset uniting, resigned to be bold
In the right light we see our own clock.
The whites of our eyes and the pink of our skin
Those orange bits flexing with scarlet
Red-blooded perhaps at this time of day
Pursuing the brightest of starlet!
There’s brown bits and black bits and all shades of grey
All turfed with some soft, grassy green
And arms reaching out over purple and blue
We’re not just what once we have been.
Tall, yes, and proud with historical etchings
And scars written in to our face
Yet every so often a smile will appear
And a beautiful, welcoming grace.
A few lines or laughter, guffawing and loud
Like waves crashing, hopelessly stoned
Yet here, on the face of it, mixing our genes
Our muscles are flexing and honed.
Delight in the sunset, this wonderful view
The edge of the seat is exciting!
And gaze with great wonder on what we can see
Land’s End, but we’ll all go down fighting!
